PIE is a security measure (it allows for ASLR) and unlike many of those, one that in fact makes some sense. I don't use graphical file managers for much of anything, and certainly not for launching applications, but it seems many don't I'd otherwise supposedly have noticed before from this forum.Īs to (eventual) solution I'd say to first check if Ubuntu's own offering also shows the issue and if not, to sit back and wait for changes/fixes to file-managers to start rolling out. I do not know if Ubuntu's own file-manager has the same issue it is not fully straightforward to in fact discriminate between PIE-executables and shared libraries (due to reality being somewhat more fluid than the ELF-specification) but I feel it interesting that this is in fact the first time I notice, even though some googling suggests the issue having been present since Ubuntu 16.04 hence Mint 18. Code: Select all echo "int main(void) " | gcc -xc -no-pie -o no-pie.
